Flood Update - Tuesday

April 17th 2007 04:20 am

Great news! All NJT rail lines will be operating on normal schedules today.

Update: Raritan Valley Line trains are bypassing Bound Brook and Bridgewater stations.

Update II: The Mountain View station on the Boonton Line is apparently inaccessible.

Even better news: You don’t have to file your Federal tax return until April 19. But you still have to file your New Jersey taxes by midnight tonight.

Raritan Valley Line trains will continue to bypass Bound Brook Station until further notice due to flooding.

The pedestrian tunnel required to access the eastbound platform could well be flooded. But Main Street and the Queen’s Bridge to South Bound Brook are open to pedestrians. The DASH bus is also running on a detour. Another shuttle bus is also running along Route 28 to Somerville and North Branch college all day.

The Raritan River has been below flood stage for 6 days. I don’t know why the Bound Brook train station is still closed.

They really don’t wany anyone in Bound Brook without a legitimate reason, i.e. residents, business owners, or others involved in the recovery effort. There is also an enforced curfew 10pm-7am. Free county shuttle buses from Somerville can get them there. The 114 also runs along Union Avenue.

So let me get this straight… People who ride the free bus or the 114 are allowed to go to Bound Brook, but train riders aren’t allowed.

Gee, dontcha think that “residents, business owners, or others involved in the recovery effort” might benefit from the train service? What about residents who had their cars totaled in the flood? Maybe the train service would be of use to them.

Not being there to see, I am not going to make a judgement on this one.

Still closed on Tuesday. Only excuse I can see is that the 114 does not go south of 2nd Street where the damaged Main Street and RR station are.

This seems to be a home rule doing by Bound Brook, not NJT’s fault, with regards to downtown access. Since people’s belongings are hanging out to dry, police presence is heavy, all vehicles are being stopped, home improvement contractors aren’t even getting in. Stopping the trains there would be an uncontrollable access point they don’t want to deal with.
