Yes, it’s April Fool’s Day, but this photo is a real photo of equipment that was used by NJT. The photo was taken on August 23, 1984, on the Morristown Line. The cars were as dreary, dark, and hot as the photo appears. And take a look at the condition of the floor. But the cars had 2-and-2 seating!
Just a little reminder of what rail travel in NJ was like not all that long ago.

Ah, the old Edison Electrics–and how I miss them! They ran on-time; in fact, you could set your watch by them. The down side was they were hot and you didn’t dare wear polyester; lest you snag your suit on the wicker seats. You also did not put your elbow up on the window sill because of the dirt and grime. Some of the windows would also slam shut like a guillotine; so, you kept your fingers out of harms way. All this being said, they bring back good memories. Thanks, Bob, for finding this. By the way, where did you find it?

Where did I find the photo? I took it! I’m the photographer. The photo was taken on 8/23/1984, the next to last day of operation of the old cars. I used Kodak’s ISO 1000 print film, which had just been introduced at the time. That’s why the image is rather grainy.
The picture was taken at night, of course, on a westbound train somewhere between Summit and Morris Plains. It was a hot, muggy, summer night. Rainstorms had passed through a couple hours earlier.
When I was commuting by train, I would carry the photo in my briefcase. If any of my “train friends” complained about the Arrows, I’d show them the photo and ask if they preferred the old trains. That was usually the end of the complaints.

Hmmm. Do my eyes decieve me or do these cars have a moderm innovation–customer friendly seats that acutually allow customers to move the seat backs? So a customer can ride in either deirection, so 2 couples riding together can face each other and talk to each other or 4 friends can play a few hands of Bridge? Do these cars have 4 across seating to allow customers to ride like reasonably civilized human beings? Maybe, just maybe, we may see the day when NJT will actually customers to have an amenity like the lucky people who ride this railroad have.
