Regular service today

April 6th 2007 12:00 am

Trains will operate on a regular weekday schedule today. But since today is a state holiday, Off-Peak Round-Trip Tickets will be valid on all trains. That’s a good excuse to take a ride, if you don’t have to work.

And I did just that. For the measly 15% discount NJT gives us, I enjoyed Express service between North Branch (free parking) and Newark. Onwards to Herald Square on PATH for $1.50. Then, on a bene we don’t get here, a $7 Metrocard FUNPASS, an all day worldwind tour thru Queens and western Nassau Counties: IND to 42nd, #7 to Flushing, LI Bus N20 to Great Neck, N25 to Franklin Square (1st lunch at a diner), N25 to Lynbrook, N4 to Jamaica, J train to Richmond Hill (2nd lunch at historic Jahns Ice Cream and look at abandoned LIRR station), J to Woodhaven Blvd (visit 1960’s stomping grounds), J to Fulton Street (all J’s observed ran on German precision down by the timetable on 10 minute frequencies with 38 year old R42 cars), PATH to Newark. Basically , NJT has a lot to learn about punctuality, intermodalism, and the discretionary traveler.
