Raritan Line also being cut on weekends

April 27th 2008

This little-used service to Hoboken is eliminated on weekends as of May 11. It will eliminate the use of a trainset and crew with the remaining service run with 3 trainsets. Except for a St. Patrick’s parade in Hoboken, I have never witnessed more than 6 people on board those trains east of Newark. That […]

Penn Centralization of NJT M&E Service Continues

April 25th 2008

Midday weekday M&E service will soon more or less resemble what it is on weekends: hourly service between Dover and NYPS, dovetailing at Summit with a slower hourly Gladstone-Hoboken local service requiring the latter to sit at Summit for 10 or more minutes.
While weekend service frequency remains constant for all stations, there will be […]

NJT - The Way Too Slow

February 17th 2008

A friend of mine recently had to make a trip from Hoboken to Chatham, on the Morris & Essex Line, on a Saturday morning. He complained that the trip took over an hour. That sounded way too long for a 23.5 mile trip, so I checked the schedule. My friend was right, […]

Rail Shuttle to Provide Alternate Mode of Travel

October 24th 2007

Please read this article carefully:

Before you might say “so what, who cares about the LI South Fork”, draw the analogy and learn from the example. These three, recently inaugurated, weekday round-trips between Speonk and Montauk connect with nothing at Speonk, yet already are carrying more than a busload worth of people, and exist because their […]

Gladstone Branch finally back to normal

September 30th 2007

Hooray! The substitute busing on the Gladstone Branch has finally ended! Let’s hope we never have to do that for an entire summer again. I wonder what effect that had on the ridership.

Pascack Valley Line off-peak/weekend service

July 31st 2007

You may have heard that the Pascack Valley Line will have off-peak and weekend service starting October 28, 2007. NJ Transit has installed four passing sidings and a new signal system on the line (a project that took years longer than it should have), allowing the increase in service.
NJ Transit and Metro-North haven’t finalized […]

Montclair weekend service

July 10th 2007

You may not have noticed, but NJ Transit operated trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line last Saturday, July 7. The Fireworks Express trains, apparently paid for by PSE&G, provided free service to and from the Township of Montclair’s fireworks display. The trains served the Bay Street, Walnut Street, Watchung Avenue, Upper Montclair, and Mountain […]
