NJT in the proposed state budget

February 26th 2008

If I’m reading the new proposed state budget correctly, NJ Transit’s funding would go from $298.2 million to $358.2 million, an increase of 20%.
Elsewhere in the above document, I see references to increasing NJT’s funding by $100 million, then reducing it by $40 million. (That’s where the $60 million figure comes from.) The […]

February 21st 2008

I wrote about the advantages of raising the state’s gas tax back in October. Now, Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman John Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) has proposed a combination of an increased gas tax, increased tolls, and selling the lottery as a way to pay down state debt and pay for transportation projects:
Wisniewski’s plan would not create […]

Toll scheme is extremely unfair

January 13th 2008

Governor Corzine’s scheme to hike tolls more than 700% over 14 years is extremely unfair. According to figures published by the Star-Ledger, the burden of paying the state’s debt will be unfairly placed on the backs of the toll road users. The following chart shows the relative amount of tolls paid per capita […]

Toll scheme details

January 8th 2008

After spending many months and millions of dollars, Governor Corzine has finally released the details on his toll scheme. Bottom line, by 2022:

Turnpike tolls increase by over 8x today’s rates
Parkway barrier tolls increase to $5.40 (yes, $5.40 for each toll plaza)

This assumes a 3% inflation rate. If inflation is higher, the tolls will […]

Who makes money on toll scheme?

December 9th 2007

An article in the Sunday Star-Ledger makes it clear that some people stand to make huge amounts of money on Governor Corzine’s secret monetization plan (emphasis added):
Gov. Jon Corzine’s plan to raise highway tolls so he can slice the state’s debt by $16 billion is expected to unleash a huge free-for-all by Trenton lobbyists and […]

Wisniewski questions Kolluri’s numbers

November 29th 2007

As we reported yesterday, the size of the toll and gas tax increases proposed by state Transportation Commissioner Kris Kolluri just don’t make sense. He’s talking about a large gas tax increase but is low-balling the size of the toll increase. Now Assemblyman John Wisniewski, who is chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee, […]
