TWO NJ-ARP OFFICERS ADD NATIONAL DUTIES

Albert Papp Elected Secretary for National Association of Railroad Passengers;
NJ-ARP's Joseph Versaggi Named NARP Director-At-Large

CHATHAM, N.J., May 27, 2004 -- Two New Jerseyans have acquired expanded responsibilities within the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP), in addition to their duties within the New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers (NJ-ARP).

NJ-ARP Director Albert Papp, a Maplewood resident re-elected to a second term in March, was elected NARP Secretary during NARP's annual board meeting in Washington, D.C., in April. Joseph Versaggi of Bridgewater, NJ-ARP's Raritan Valley Liaison, was one of 10 elected as an "at-large" director.

A third New Jerseyan, NJ-ARP Vice President James Ciacciarelli of Barnegat, joins the pair to complete New Jersey's representation on the NARP Board. Ciacciarelli also was re-elected to the post in March.

"My goals for improving NARP include expanding membership, soliciting member feedback, and involving its officers and directors more fully in the management of the association," Papp said. He noted NARP plans to re-evaluate its relationship with state and regional rail associations, including NJ-ARP, in hopes of creating more effective synergies.

Versaggi will be one of those coordinating NJ-ARP activity within NARP. "Having been a NARP member for 25 years and attended Spring Director's Board meetings for 13 years, this election confirms my commitment to Amtrak's national system and gives me the visibility I need to more effectively have my thoughts heard and counted," Versaggi said.

The National Association of Railroad Passengers, based in Washington, was founded in 1970 to preserve a national passenger rail network, though it also works on other passenger rail issues.

NJ-ARP, founded in 1980, is the Garden State's citizens lobby group dedicated to the expansion and improvement of New Jersey's passenger rail and public transit systems. Though technically not an affiliate, NJ-ARP officially is "closely allied" with NARP on rail passenger issues.
